Digital Notebook Detectives
Students rescue a classmate's messy pretend drive, invent a naming and folder system, use version history to recover lost work, and catch what an AI summary of their notes left out.
Students now keep a lot of their schoolwork in digital notebooks and drives, and "I can't find it" costs real learning time. In this hybrid lesson, teams open a paper "drive" belonging to a fictional student, Theo, full of files named Untitled document (2) and asdfgh. They race to find one assignment, then build folders and a naming rule, use a printed version history to recover a paragraph a teammate deleted, and compare Theo's field trip notes to an AI summary that sounds complete but drops the most important details. Students leave owning a filing plan they can use tomorrow on a real device.

Owl Report Version History and the Field Trip Notes
Part 1: Read the version history and find the missing paragraph. Part 2: Read Theo's notes, then the AI summary. Underline what the summary left out. Circle what it added.
1PART 1: VERSION HISTORY of "Science – Owl Report" (shared by Theo with Kai and Lina). Each line is a saved version: when it was saved, who changed it, and what changed.
2Monday 9:05 AM, Theo: Wrote the first paragraph: "Owls can turn their heads very far, but not all the way around." Tuesday 10:30 AM, Lina: Added a paragraph about how owls hear well enough to hunt in the dark. Tuesday 2:15 PM, Theo: Added a paragraph: "Owls swallow small animals whole and later cough up pellets. Scientists open pellets to learn what owls eat." Wednesday 8:50 AM, Kai: Deleted the pellets paragraph and added a picture of an owl. Wednesday 1:00 PM, Theo: "Wait, where did my pellets paragraph go?"
3PART 2: THEO'S FIELD TRIP NOTES (written in class). Field trip to Pecan Bend Nature Center next Tuesday. Permission slip must be signed and returned by FRIDAY or you can't go. The bus leaves at 7:45, not 8:15 like last time. Wear closed-toe shoes because we will walk on trails. Bring a water bottle with your name on it. Lunch is packed from home; no food will be for sale. Ms. Alvarez said to remind her about any food or bee allergies before Friday. We will see the bird blind, the pond, and the owl exhibit. Bring a pencil for the scavenger hunt sheet.
4PART 2: AI SUMMARY. Theo asked an AI tool: "Make my notes shorter." The tool answered: "Field Trip Summary: Next Tuesday your class visits Pecan Bend Nature Center. You will see the bird blind, the pond, and the owl exhibit. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a pencil and some lunch money. It will be a fun day of learning outdoors!"
5THINK ABOUT IT: The summary is short, friendly, and sounds complete. If Theo threw away his notes and kept only the summary, what might go wrong next Tuesday morning?
