Privacy & Compliance

What we collect

Nothing. No accounts, no logins, no analytics, no tracking cookies, and no data sent to any server. Everything runs inside the student's browser. The only things stored are the student's own progress, their typed responses, the Gen AI on/off preference, and the language choice — kept in that browser's localStorage (keys contraband.douglass.v1 and tcea.breakouts.lang), which never leave the device. The Reset button erases saved progress at any time.

Outside requests

The page loads only Google Fonts for typography; all activity code and content are served from the same site, with <meta name="referrer" content="no-referrer"> set. No student writing is ever transmitted. The optional Gen AI panel provides copyable prompts only — it does not connect to any AI service, and it warns students never to paste names or private information into district-approved tools they open separately.

A note on student work

Every response a student types stays in their own browser and appears only on the page they choose to print. Nothing is submitted or seen by anyone else. Follow your district's policies for any printed artifacts students create.

How this maps to the rules that protect students

Texas Student Data Privacy Agreement (TX-NDPA / SDPC)

The activity collects, stores, and transmits no personally identifiable student information and creates no student records off the device, so it falls outside the scope that requires a signed Data Privacy Agreement.

Texas SCOPE Act — Texas Education Code §32.151–32.156

No operator data collection, targeted advertising, profiling, or monitoring of minors.

FERPA (20 U.S.C. §1232g)

No education records are created, stored, or disclosed by these pages.

COPPA

No personal information is collected from children — there is nothing to collect.

GDPR / UK GDPR

No personal data is processed, so there is nothing to access, export, rectify, or erase.

CIPA

Static, self-contained educational content with no user-generated communication or open web browsing.

Accessibility (VPAT-lite)

• Semantic headings, keyboard-operable controls, visible focus outlines, and focus moved to the activity region on section change.
• Correct and incorrect answers are shown with text and a color bar, never color alone.
• The arcade game offers per-card buttons, so it never requires drag-and-drop; there are no timers and no lives system.
• Live regions announce progress; reduced-motion support; responsive to small phones; and a print stylesheet for the student packet.

This room supports Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave by Frederick Douglass (1845). This memoir is in the public domain and is freely available to read and listen to — for example through Project Gutenberg and LibriVox — so students need no purchased copy. This room paraphrases from well-established public knowledge of the memoir rather than reproducing long passages, and it invents no quotations. Original activity content is licensed under CC BY-NC 4.0; the source memoir itself is in the public domain and free for anyone to use. Content is aligned to, not reproduced from, the standards in the Teacher Guide; TEKS and ELPS alignments are marked Needs review.
