Before students can reason about the canal problem, they need the raw material: the vocabulary, the strategic facts, and the geography. These three activities are fast and front-loaded β the goal is acquisition, not yet analysis.
Introduce and let students sort the unit vocabulary. Sort twice: first by "words about geography & engineering" vs. "words about power & sovereignty," then by student-invented categories (feedback on their reasoning).

Split the class into four expert groups, each studying one topic below, then re-mix into home groups where every topic is represented. Each expert teaches their group. (Jigsaw is one of the highest-leverage surface moves precisely because students must teach.)

Ferdinand de Lesseps, builder of the Suez Canal, launched a French effort in the 1880s. Yellow fever, malaria, landslides, and money troubles killed roughly 22,000 workers and bankrupted the company before it collapsed.

Congress nearly chose a longer, sea-level Nicaragua route. Lobbyist Philippe Bunau-Varilla swayed the vote toward Panama β partly with a Nicaraguan postage stamp showing an erupting volcano to warn of danger.

Dr. William Gorgas's mosquito-control campaign made the American effort possible; chief engineer George Goethals designed a high, lock-and-lake canal. It opened in 1914 β but at a cost of about 5,600 lives in the U.S. era.

Check for understanding: each home group writes two sentences answering "Give one reason a canal mattered to U.S. power, and one reason building it was so hard."
Using a world map, students locate the Isthmus of Panama and mark both candidate routes: Panama (shorter, mountainous, lock canal) and Nicaragua (longer, using Lake Nicaragua, near active volcanoes). Then trace the pre-canal voyage around Cape Horn and the world shipping lanes a canal would shorten β New York β San Francisco dropping from ~13,000 to ~5,000 nautical miles.
Quick write: "A canal at ______ would shorten the trip from ______ to ______, which matters for ______ (trade / naval power) because ______."
